The Marikosa-sticker
In traffic, incidents occur on a regular basis.
During these accidents, excessive forces are exerted on the human body. Due to these forces, there is a great chance for whiplash. Rescuers cannot prevent the accident itself, but with proper first aid, the negative health effects can be minimized.
For a rescuer on site, it is impossible to determine whether or not whiplash has occurred. Therefore, the rescuer will treat the victim as a victim of whiplash. The rescuer must prevent the victim from moving the body, and especially, the head. It is difficult to prevent a conscious victim from moving his or her head. The situation is far from comfortable, and a lot is happening in the vicinity of the vehicle once the rescuers have arrived.
To help the victim keep his or her head and body in the best position to prevent further injury, we present to you the Marikosa-sticker. The sticker can be placed on the front window of the vehicle, or in cases of multi-passengers, it can also be placed on the backside of the headrest. Due to the placement of the Marikosa-sticker, the victim will automatically adapt to the best body position during his or her rescue. The rescuer can use the sticker as a reminder for the victim to maintain the correct body position during his examination.
It all started with a piece of chalk…
The idea behind the Marikosa-sticker started with Richard Bousma, a professional fire fighter, and Sander Witte, an oil-rig professional, who both live on Texel, one of the Dutch islands in the so-called “Waddenzee”. Whenever he had to assist after a car incident, Richard had a habit of making a mark on the front windscreen using a piece of chalk. For the victim, this was the point to look at. While the victim was focusing on this mark, he or she wouldn’t turn his or her head. This would prevent further neck injury.
The mark made by the piece of chalk evolved into the Marikosa-sticker
There is a story behind what some refer to as our peculiar name, “Marikosa”. We had been busy for a long time with finding a name for the company behind our idea. We tried several names and abbreviations. Every time we thought we had found one, a quick check on the internet revealed that the new found name was not all that original. Every time these checks ended up in disappointment. That is, until the day “Marikosa” was born.
We “met” Marikosa because she is the imaginary girlfriend of Richards’s youngest daughter. A check on Google proved it to be an original and unique name. Nobody on the globe had claimed her name before. From that day on “Marikosa” was ours, and no longer imaginary.
Why use the Marikosa-sticker?
Placing the Marikosa-sticker on a front windscreen is one more task for the already busy rescuer. Why should we bother the rescuer who can save lives with his knowledge and skills, with the Marikosa-sticker? There must be a very good reason for this. We at Marikosa think there are several good reasons.
The Marikosa-sticker acts as a guide for the victim. The victim will hold the head steadier while focusing on to the sticker.
The words on the Marikosa-sticker are designed to comfort the victim in a stressful situation, and the colors green and white help to create this calming effect.
When there are more victims involved in the same accident, the rescuer can focus his or her attention to the most critically wounded, while verbally reminding the other victims to remain focused on their Marikosa-sticker, placed in advance by the rescuer.
By using the Marikosa-sticker(s) the rescuer gives attention to spinal injuries of all passengers in the vehicle
The Marikosa sticker is also a tool that helps the rescuer to focus on spinal injuries
The extra focus provided by the Marikosa-sticker might not be necessary for every rescuer. The sticker can also be used by police, firemen, or AA, and this is can be an advantage in any rescue operation.
Using the Marikosa-sticker can reduce the number of incidents of whiplash or further neck injury that may occur after a car incident. Probably there will be hundreds of victims who do not have to suffer the symptoms of whiplash: constant headache, dizziness or problems with their balance. Victims may not have to wear a neck brace for years and may not need to develop a relationship with their masseur. These people can pick up their normal way of living sooner. Employers can save on absenteeism hours and the total community can save on medical health costs.
The idea for the Marikosa-sticker was created somewhere in September 2010. On Saturday December 18 2010 we created a i-depot. This depot is attached to this file.
